Eye Contact

24/April/2023 in Tokyo

One thing you immediately notice in the street in Japan is

Everyone doesn't make eye contact

They avoid it, often very eagerly

But it doesn't mean they don't see you

They actually see you,
but just 0.000001 sec before you notice, they move their eyes to somewhere else not to get noticed

If you don't share the same mindset with them, this brings you a very strange vibe

Everyone avoids it, as if they are scared

They all look very awkward, nervous & timid

Avoiding eye contact is a cultural norm in this country

Looking at other's eyes is considered rude and disrespectful

But it really makes them look like a serious communication phobia
And indeed they are

An entire population in this country are morbidly communication phobic
