Smile Battle

5/October/2024 in Kraków

Friday. Nonsense

In my hotel reception

Waiting for
a young good-looking Polish boy staff

Young female hotel resident passed

Beautiful woman

Yet
her face was frown

These days
I feel I'm becoming narrow-minded

These days
just like an ex-smoker can't tolerate other smokers after he quit,
I feel some difficulty in accepting this kind of "lack of self-consciousness" & "lack of narcissism"

I wondered how much her frown face made her unattractive

And remembering Mishima's word

"........an optimistic face; it must be manufactured. This is politeness to the world."

Young good-looking Polish boy staff came

A brief chat, regarding some un-important matters about my stay

He didn't show a smile

It reminded me of that slight frustration from a frowning face girl

In order to dissolve this sticky feeling,
I gave him an extra overly smile
in order to "force him to smile"

It is very strange that I, a customer, show more friendly attitude than a hotel worker

Even if he found my smile weird,
then he justified himself

as in

".........well, smiling is not a culture here, but he is OBVIOUSLY not from here. Maybe, in his country, in some far east exotic island, this must be normal"

Or

even this young handsome Polish boy was knowledgeable enough and
did know smiling is not a norm at all in Japan,
I can still justify my own action by thinking

as in

"Well, 'Japanese in Poland' is weird enough, suspicious enough.
Then, additional, extra, minor weirdness is nothing to worry about, it's not my business"

Our "smile battle" continued for 3 min

He acted like a cool boy
He knew being cool suited his character
He knew a cool face increased his attractiveness

I tried hard to decrease his attractiveness

And in the end
"I won" and he smiled

I was too happy

Before leaving, I said
"Thanks for this help. Have a great day"

He replied

"Arigato Gozaimasu! ('Thank you' in Japanese)"

.......He definitely knew
smiling is not a norm in Japan
