a young, fashionable Polish dude boy sitting next to me in a cafe

He said the above lines

Whether he is right or not
I have a slightly different take on this matter

What I've been always aware

is

men's fashion, or fashionable men, are
fundamentally
not appreciated

by women
& by men

it means

by the society

---

For women
(a strong) social pressure exists
to dress well

So that
even if she pays "too much" attention to her clothes,
it is "relatively" hard to see her narcissism & her self-intoxication

For men
social pressure is minimum

So that
by just trying to look good "a bit",
his narcissism & self-intoxication becomes very visible & very apparent

And he looks like

"He doesn't love anyone else. He loves only himself"

And highly likely,
he loves only himself
